Welcome

I’ve been thinking of starting a weblog for a while now. There are a couple of reasons for that which I’ll briefly explain. The first is that I’m quite worried about my memory in later life. Two of my grandparents suffered from dementia before they died, and their ability to recall information from earlier in their lives was compromised as a result. If the same fate is to befall me, at least I’ll have some records of my exploits, and some pretty photos to look back on.

If I escape that fate, it’ll still be nice to go back through my old adventures. A few of my friends – most of whom started birding before I was able to tie my shoelaces – keep amazing, detailed notebooks and journals that allow them to recall almost perfectly their past experiences. Some include photographs, sketches and even summary statistics! I’ve always been impressed by that, and that’s the second inspiration for the weblog. By keeping my journal online, I can avoid the possibility of losing any physical notebooks, access it from multiple places, etc.

The last inspiration for the weblog is all the other blogs that I’ve enjoyed reading over the years. I’ve sought some of these out, and discovered others at random. Some are extant and are still being updated (I return to these regularly). Others are now extinct but remain online, waiting for new readers to step through a window into the past.

I hope all readers enjoy their time here.
